Telework

TeleworkSometimes leaving home to go to work isn't even necessary. In fact, you might not even have to put on shoes! Teleworking is a great alternative for those with the flexibility to work from home and access to communication options.

What

Telework, or telecommuting, refers to salaried employees who are allowed to work from home in order to reduce commute travel. Telecommuting is often performed on a part-time basis, with employees working from home one or two days a week. It can also be used on a temporary basis, for example, while an employee is working on a particular project, when they are ill, or when the weather impacts driving conditions.

Why

Recent reports clock an average commuter’s time spent sitting in traffic congestion at 67 hours a year. Stress and frustration with long, difficult commutes contributes to problems in employee productivity, morale and retention. Plus, you may already have employees who work at home when the weather is bad, on the weekends or when they have a project needing long periods of concentration.

How

Putting together a telecommuting program does not need to be a complicated process!

  • Get management approval to go ahead.
  • Develop a brief set of telecommuting policies.
  • Select those able to telework.
  • Determine any equipment or support needs.
  • Have any training for the teleworkers.
  • Designate a trial period and start teleworking.
