The innovative partnership that brought the first indoor bicycle parking facility to Denver was awarded the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Excellence Award for 2004. Transportation Solutions and The Nichols Partnership won the national award for their collaboration on The Cherry Creek Bike Rack, created in an effort to address the traffic impacts of the 700,000 square-foot mixed-use redevelopment project, Clayton Lane, in the busy, urban area of Cherry Creek.
Allison Billings, Executive Director of Transportation Solutions and Chris Crosby of The Nichols Partnership, received the award from Stephen Johnson, Acting Administrator for the EPA at a ceremony in Washington D.C. on Thursday, April 7. "Your innovative projects and creative programs demonstrate our national resolve for cleaner air and a healthier America. These unique contributions are an important part of air quality improvement across the nation," Johnson said.
The Bike Rack has already reduced pollution in the area measured as 12,000 lbs of hydrocarbons, 88,000 pounds of carbon monoxide, and a million and a half lbs of carbon dioxide. Vehicle miles traveled are reduced by 1.6 million each year, saving 88,000 gallons of gasoline in the process.
Since The Cherry Creek Bike Rack opened in June 2004 and paid, on-street parking was subsequently introduced, we’ve always known that The Bike Rack offered the best free parking in Cherry Creek. But in March 2005 we were officially named the Best Free Parking in Cherry Creek by the Westword in their annual “Best of Denver” issue.
Operated by Campus Cycles in partnership with Transportation Solutions, The Bike Rack provides a secure location for visitors, residents, and employees in the Cherry Creek area to park their bicycles. In addition, the facility offers repair services, rents bicycles, sells equipment and accessories, and provides transit schedules and bike route maps.
