In the 1990s, bicycle enthusiasts in Denver were immediately attracted to the bicycle parking and repair facilities modeled after European and Japanese examples that began emerging on the west coast of the United States. In order to determine the viability of a bike station in Cherry Creek, a Feasibility Assessment was conducted in 1999. Cherry Creek and Union Station emerged as potential sites.
In 2001, Transportation Solutions' staff worked with the Nichols Partnership to develop travel demand management strategies in the redevelopment of the Sears property near the intersection of First Avenue and University Boulevard in Cherry Creek North. Incorporating a bike station into the redevelopment was just one of many strategies included in the plan.
Transportation Solutions received federal funding to help build the bike station and support an operator to run the facility. The Nichols Partnership set aside approximately 1,000 square feet of space for the bike station in the newly built property which now houses a major hotel, additional retail space, and the worldwide headquarters of Janus Investment Group.
In October 2003, Transportation Solutions requested Statements of Interest (SOIs) from organizations wishing to operate the facility and received six from potential business operator. A committee reviewed the documents and from the process a local bike shop, Campus Cycles, was selected as the first operator of the bike depot.
Shortly following selection of an operator, the name, The Cherry Creek Bike Rack was agreed upon as the name of the facility.
On June 17, 2004 the Cherry Creek Bike Rack opened to the public - click here to see pictures of our grand opening event!
