Safe Routes to School

Transportation Solutions spent the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years working with three local elementary schools, Bromwell Elementary, Cory Elementary and Steck Elementary, on a Safe Routes to School project.

Schools spent the first year of the project gathering initial data on students' walking and biking habits, as well as taking an inventory of existing infrastructure around schools to facilitate or discourage safe walking and biking.

Transportation Solutions spent the winter and summer months of the first year compiling this information and working with a local group - UrbanTrans Consulting to produce Walking & Biking Maps tailored to each school. Maps were distributed to the school communities in Fall 2008, and electronic versions are available below.

In Fall 2008, we hosted Walking Wednesdays each week through October 22 to celebrate active living among our schools. All families attending Bromwell, Cory and Steck Elementary were encouraged to participate in these free events. Each week Transportation Solutions was out with prizes for kids and information for adults. Participation seemed to really increase over the weeks, and the events were a lot of fun!

Late Fall 2008 was spent gathering post-project data about walking & biking habits of the school families to see if the project had any effect on behavior. The City of Denver Department of Environmental Health is compiling results and final impact data should be available soon.
